Presenter:

Yolanda Fountain Hardy, PhD, LPC, RPT-S, ACS, NCC is a licensed (state of Georgia) and national board-certified professional counselor, play therapy supervisor (RPT-S), sand therapy specialist, Certified Brainspotting Practitioner, Rostered Child Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) provider, mental health forensic consultant, and emerging yoga practitioner. Dr. Fountain Hardy is the owner of Play Wellness LLC in Roswell, Georgia, a private practice that provides intergenerational mental health care as well as supervision and training services for clinical professionals. She also founded the Child Loss Center Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit that provides health and education services to assist grieving parents and families recovering from infertility, pregnancy, infant, and child loss. Dr. Fountain Hardy has provided mental health services to children, adults, and families since 2006, has presented nearly 200 times locally and internationally, has clinically supervised over 150 mental health professionals, and has taught master’s and doctoral level courses at multiple universities in-person and virtually since 2011.

DAY ONE (FRIDAY):

Puppetry and Storytelling in Play Therapy

Description/ Abstract:

What time is it?  It is story time!  Join us for an interactive learning experience that focuses on using puppets and stories to support and empower clients in play therapy. Participants will create puppets and practice crafting stories and puppet shows to aid in integrating play therapy theory and practice.

Learning Objectives 

After the workshop, participants will be able to:

    1. Identify at least five benefits of using puppets and storytelling within the practice of play therapy
    2. Explain three storytelling types to assist clients with identifying, processing, and resolving intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts
    3. Discuss one bibliotherapy technique to enhance the parent-child relationship
    4. Create two puppets to enhance the play therapist’s self-awareness
    5. Practice three storytelling activities for use with play therapy clients to enhance self-awareness, group cohesion, and imaginative skills
    6. Engage in three puppetry activities for use with play therapy clients to enhance feeling awareness, communication/social skills, and grief processing

DAY TWO (Saturday):

Cultural Humility for Play Therapists

Description:

Culture can be challenging to grasp yet is essential to understand!  This learning experience focuses on enhancing multicultural knowledge, skills, and humility for play therapy practice.  Participants will explore relevant terms, identify barriers to effectiveness, practice activities to deepen cultural self-awareness and humility, and explore ways to create a culturally sensitive play therapy room.

Learning Objectives:

After the workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Define cultural humility and the three components of its application
  2. Explore three cultures of childhood and five ethical guidelines that regard culture as promulgated by the Association for Play Therapy
  3. List four principles that play therapists need to hone self-awareness necessary for a culturally humble practice
  4. Review seven barriers to wholesome multiculturalism within play therapy
  5. Practice three activities to cultivate a culturally humble play therapist using the Self-ARC concept (Fountain Hardy, 2021)
  6. Identify three ways to enhance a culturally sensitive play therapy space
