Terry Kottman, Ph.D., NCC, RPT-S, LMHC, developed Adlerian play therapy, an approach to working with children, families, and adults that combines the ideas and techniques of Individual Psychology and play therapy. She founded the League of Extraordinary Adlerian Play Therapists (LEAPT), an organization that provides play therapy training and offers a certification program in Adlerian play therapy. Terry regularly presents workshops and writes about play therapy and about the importance of play therapists understanding videogames. She is the author or editor of 14 books, mostly about play therapy.
Nikki Pauli, LMHC, NCC, RPT-S, runs a successful private practice in Cedar Falls, IA. She is passionate about walking alongside adults, children, families, and couples throughout the therapeutic process. DAY TWO (Saturday):
Play Therapy Techniques for Working with Preteens and Teens
Description:
Be prepared for fun while learning play therapy strategies to help preteens and teens gain a sense of belonging and positive identity, increase self-esteem, build relationships, and learn to share power. In this exciting (and probably loud) workshop, the participants will get to experience a wide variety of fun activities that they can use with their preteen and teen clients. Our focus will be on new and creative strategies that play therapists can use to “hook” pre-adolescents and adolescents into engaging fully in the therapeutic process. Through these playful interventions, clients can gain a sense of belonging, develop positive identities, increase self-esteem, build meaningful relationships, gain personal power in positive ways, and practice appropriate expression of feelings, including anger. The strategies presented in this workshop can also be used to help improve communication, teach conflict resolution, and build connections between youth and their parents and other family members.
Learning Objectives:
After the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe 3 play therapy techniques they can use to build relationships with pre-adolescent and adolescent clients.
- Describe 3 play therapy techniques they can use to explore the interpersonal and intrapersonal dynamics of pre-adolescent and adolescent clients.
- Describe 3 play therapy techniques they can use to help pre-adolescent and adolescent clients gain insight into their interpersonal and intrapersonal dynamics.
- Describe 3 play therapy techniques to help pre-adolescent and adolescent clients learn and practice new ways of communicating and interacting with others.
- Explain important developmental considerations when working with pre-adolescents and adolescents.
- Describe 2 play therapy techniques they can use to help improve communication, conflict resolution, and build connections between youth, their parents, and other family members.
