Metaphors in the Sand: A Two Day Training with Using Sand and Miniatures in Play Therapy

This workshop is designed for the beginner as well as the advanced play therapist, school counselors, teachers, social workers, and anyone who works with children.  Participants will gain beginning aspects of using sand trays in Play Therapy and how to incorporate sand trays in their play rooms.  Participates will learn sand tray techniques that they can use with children immediately.

PRESENTERS:

Tracy Turner- Bumberry is the owner of KS Counseling, LLC in St. Charles, MO. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor. Tracy is also a Certified AutPlay Therapist, and a Certified Autism Specialist. She has over fifteen years of experience working with children, adolescents, and young  adults. Tracy has been in private practice since 2009. Prior to working in private practice, she worked as a high school teacher and an elementary school counselor. She currently conducts workshops focusing on mindfulness in play therapy, and is in the process of writing her second book for therapists. Her first book is entitled “Finding Meaning with Mandalas-A Therapist’s Guide to Creating Mandalas with Children”. Tracy received a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education Grades K-8 from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She received her Masters degree in School and Professional Counseling from Lindenwood University. She has been licensed by the state of Missouri since 2005, and has been a Registered Play Therapist since 2007. She is currently a member of the Association for Play Therapy (APT) and the American Counseling Association (ACA).

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

             DAY 1:

    • Participants will learn the basics of beginning sand tray in Play therapy, including type of sand, types of sand trays, and selection/arrangement of miniatures.
    • Participants will learn a specific technique for conducting a sand tray play therapy session
    • Participants will learn to process the sand tray scene both during and after the Play Therapy session

DAY 2:

    • Participants will directly experience the process of creating sand trays in Play Therapy by completing 3 sand tray interventions
    • Participants will be able to practice processing the sand trays in Play Therapy with 3 sand tray interventions

DAY 1

8:30am-9am             Registration

9am-12:00pm          Introduce basics of sand trays; highlight “Sandtray Therapy: A Practical Manual” by Linda Homeyer and Daniel Sweeney, identify materials, types of sand and basic set up of the play therapy room

12:00pm-1:00pm    Lunch

1:00pm- 4:30pm     Introduce processing  both directive and non directive sand tray creations

DAY 2

8:30am-9am             Sign in/Welcome

9am-12:00pm          Participants will be able to complete 3-4 sand trays, one non-directive, 2-3 directive, practice asking processing questions after others’ sand trays are complete. Participants will experience first hand the powerful healing the completion of sand trays can provide.

12:00pm-1:00pm    Lunch/Board Meeting

1:00pm- 4:30pm     The practice of sand trays will continue. Participants will complete sand trays, process others’ sand trays and experience the healing of sand trays. Evaluations.

DESCRIPTION:
Are you looking for new play therapy ideas and techniques to work with your children? Are you just curious about incorporating sand trays in your practice, techniques and how they can benefit your clients? Are you just wondering what play therapy is all about?  If you answered “yes” to any of those questions then this workshop is for you!  This workshop is designed for the beginner as well as the advanced play therapist, school counselor, teachers, social workers, and anyone who works with children.  This is a two day workshop focusing on the beginning aspects of using sand trays in Play Therapy. Having clients complete sand trays  can be a healing process, and Play Therapists can greatly benefit from learning how to incorporate sand tray interventions in their play rooms. Workshop participants will also be given the opportunity to experience their own growth and healing by completing 3-4 sand trays of their own!

Cancellation policy

Refunds will be given for paid continuing education training cancelled by MAPT and for when MAPT relocates training to another region of the state.  For attendees who cancel 48 hours prior to the start of the training, a MAPT CREDIT will be provided to attendees for the amount paid, and can be used at a future MAPT training.
