Affirming Play Therapy with LGBTGEQIAP+ Youth and Families in Clinical Practice and School Counseling Content Area for Licensing

Ceus:  6 hours

Description: Culturally responsive play therapy approaches will inform participants on ways to create a safe and brave play therapy environment supporting LGBTGEQIAP+ youth and families. This presentation will describe culturally sensitive terminology and affirming language related to affectional orientation and internal gender in addition to a demonstration of play therapy competencies and advocacy skills to build therapeutic alliance in play therapy. The presenter will provide a comprehensive review of ASCA’s position to working with LGBTGEQIAP+ youth so play therapists can be so they can advocate for youth and families within school settings. Participants will engage in experiential activities and learn about resources to be better prepared to apply culturally responsive play therapy interventions with LGBTGEQIAP+ youth in clinical or school settings.

In this workshop, participants will learn:

  1. Demonstrate key aspects of cultural responsiveness in the playroom toward LGBTGEQIAP+ Youth and Families to support play therapists multicultural, social justice, and intersectional frameworks so they can develop affirming play therapy intakes, assessments, and interventions.

  2. Describe strengths and barriers experienced by LGBTGEQIAP+ Youth and Families so affirming play therapy is provided

  3. Create a plan to advocate for LGBTGEQIAP+ Youth and Families inside and outside of the play therapy room

  4. Analyze ASCA’s position on working with LGBTGEQIAP+ Youth and Families to provide affirming play therapy interventions within school setting

  5. Identify 3-4 local, national, and global resources to provide LGBTGEQIAP+ Youth and Families so they can access affirming resources outside of play therapy

  6. Apply 3-4 affirming play therapy interventions that support LGBTGEQIAP+ Youth and Families

How are workshop topics decided?

Yearly, during the annual conference, attendees share what topics that they would like to see presented in the future.

How are the regional workshop locations decided?

Our state board rotates the regional workshops throughout the areas of the state, giving each part of the state the opportunity to have a workshop close to home.

How do you decide who your presenters are?

Yearly, during the annual conference, attendees share possible Missouri APT member professionals that they would like to that they would like to hear present topics that they specialize in.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellation policy:  Refunds will be given for paid continuing education training cancelled by MAPT and for when MAPT relocates training to another region of the state.  For attendees who cancel 48 hours prior to the start of the training, a MAPT CREDIT will be provided to attendees for the amount paid, and can be used at a future MAPT training..
